Many homes here in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area have basements—which are great additional living spaces, whether a children’s play area, extra bedroom or gym. But basements are, unfortunately, more prone than other areas of a home to water infiltration.
This is why waterproofing is so important. While waterproofing systems are added during construction for many homes, sometimes they are necessary for existing ones as well. Is this the case for you? There are many different waterproofing solutions, drain tile a common one.
What Is Drain Tile & How Does It Work?
There is both exterior and interior drain tile.
Exterior drain tile (French drain) is, as the name suggests, placed outside your home. It stops and diverts ground water before it can get into your basement. A trench is dug around the entire foundation down to the footings—and some type of waterproofing membrane is installed to protect against seepage. Although it can be more labor intensive, exterior drain tile installation is not as disruptive to the interior of the home and basement.
There are a couple different types of interior drain tile—one is an above-concrete slab solution. Although not practical for block walls where water can just pool, it is more effective with poured concrete walls, where cracks are the source of water infiltration. Sub-concrete slab interior drain tile is another option.
